Superman faces “The Dawn Man”, a frozen Neanderthal specimen who, upon being thawed, is revealed to be a gentle beast easily tamed by Lois Lane. Without warning, though, the Dawn Man turns violent, killing and robbing wantonly – it turns out, however, to be a ruse committed by an opportunistic museum scientist and a hired thug in a caveman costume. The Dawn Man remains not only gentle but heroic, and perishes helping Superman defeat the prehistoric impostor.
As super-villains become the theme of 1942, so too do weird and intriguing foes whose oeuvre is unusual acts of crime and cruelty. The Dawn Man – despite its potential – never truly was a super-villain, but the strange circumstances of the story are indicative of a thematic addition to Superman’s early adventures. Amid the crooks, spies, mad scientists and saboteurs, Superman has to deal with the weirdos, too…
